Fly Fishing in Serbia

Serbia is rapidly emerging as one of the most compelling destinations on the European fly-fishing map, offering a raw and authentic experience that many overcrowded Alpine rivers have lost. The country boasts a diverse network of dedicated fly-only beats, each with its own distinct character—from crystal-clear limestone springs to powerful mountain currents. These waters are no longer just spots to explore; they are technical arenas where wild Brown Trout and Grayling demand a higher level of skill. For the modern angler, Serbia represents a frontier where the quality of the fishery is matched by the need for specialized local knowledge and technical precision.

THE RIVER DRINA

The Drina is a legendary tailwater forming the natural border between Serbia and Bosnia, standing as the premier destination for large-scale fly fishing in the Balkans. With a width reaching nearly 100 meters, its crystal-clear waters house a world-class population of trophy Grayling, wild Brown Trout, and the apex predator of the region, the Huchen (Danube Salmon). While the river is remarkably approachable, its sheer scale and fluctuating water levels present a unique technical challenge. Mastering the Drina requires more than just luck; it demands specialized instruction in long-range presentation, complex line management, and the ability to ‘read’ deep-water hydraulics. Whether you are hunting for a 50cm+ Grayling or targeting the elusive Huchen, the Drina serves as the ultimate classroom for any angler looking to elevate their distance casting and nymphing precision.

THE GRADAC RIVER

The Gradac River is a pristine, emerald gem and arguably Serbia’s most prestigious fly-fishing-only zone. As a strictly protected nature reserve, it offers an intimate ‘small stream’ experience where the wild Brown Trout thrive in untouched surroundings. The Gradac is a biological powerhouse, exceptionally rich in aquatic insect life, making it a sanctuary for the purist. While it is widely considered a dry fly paradise during the prolific hatches, the river’s diverse structure—ranging from deep limestone pockets to fast runs—provides the perfect environment for mastering advanced European nymphing and technical streamer presentations. Due to its gin-clear water and the wary nature of its wild fish, the Gradac is not just a place to fish; it is a place to learn the art of stealth, precise approach.

Gradac is rich in aquatic insects and perfect for dry fly fishing, but also for nymphing or streamer fishing.

RIVER MORAVICA

Moving to South Serbia, the Moravica stands out as a hidden gem for the technical enthusiast. This small, 10-kilometer fly-only tailwater is home to some of the most vibrant and fast-growing wild Brown Trout in the region, known for their extraordinary colors and strength. Unlike the open banks of larger rivers, the Moravica is an intimate, ‘bushy’ stream that demands high-level line control and creative casting. Its narrow structure and overhanging canopy make it the ultimate training ground for mastering European Nymphing or deploying delicate dry fly presentations with short, lightweight rods.

Because of its challenging terrain, the Moravica is where a certified instructor becomes invaluable; here, I teach my clients the art of stealthy approaches, specialized ‘bow-and-arrow’ casts, and how to dissect complex currents in tight quarters. It is a rewarding fishery for those who value precision over distance.

THE DJETINJA RIVER

TheDjetinja River, flowing through a breathtaking, high-walled limestone gorge in Western Serbia, is a sanctuary of biological diversity and untouched natural beauty. As a strictly managed and highly protected fishery, it offers a truly unique multi-species experience. While it remains a premier destination for wild Brown Trout—renowned for their aggressive rises to dry flies—the success story of the Djetinja is its thriving Grayling population. Since their introduction a decade ago, these fish have flourished in the oxygen-rich currents, with trophy specimens exceeding 45cm or even 50cm becoming a common sight for the skilled angler.

Brown trout fishing is excellent in Djetinja, especially on dry flies.

Perhaps most surprising is the river’s dual character: despite its modest width and ‘small river’ feel, the deep, shadowed pools of the Đetinja gorge hide massive Huchen (Danube Salmon) reaching over 110cm. Navigating this rugged terrain requires more than just standard gear; it demands an instructor’s guidance on stealth, specialized casting angles within the gorge, and the tactical patience needed to target trophy fish in intimate quarters. The Đetinja is not just a river—it is a dramatic, vertical wilderness that challenges every aspect of your technical repertoire.

Fly Fishing on Plav’s Lake (Plavsko jezero) in Montenegro

If you visit the famous fly fishing region of Plav in Northern Montenegro (119km from Podgorica Airport, 196km from Tirana Airport), don’t forget to try your luck at the beautiful natural lake, besides the 4 fly fishing zones on the nearby rivers. When you get enough nice grayling, trout, and maybe even river huchen, it’s time for the Stillwater.

Lake Plav’s Trout or “blatnjača” is the queen of this lake. Very rare fly fishers caught this fish and it is absolutely wild and undisturbed with dries, nymphs, or streamers. His name is sometimes confused with “mud trout” because the wrong translation of the old word for the lake was “blato”, which today means “mud”. So, the truth is that once upon a time, the name of the lake was “Plavsko blato”, and that’s what gave the name of its trout “blatnjača”. That really means “jezerska”, or just “lake trout”. Also, there is a theory that Plav’s Lake Trout is a species that you can find in Asia, but I’m not sure about it. I would rather claim it is just a special form of Salmo trutta lacustris.

My guests ( and I too) caught most of Plav’s Lake Trout on small streamers and larger nymphs, using fly rods and lines #6-7 and tippets 0.16-0.20mm.

Lake huchen are much thicker than the river ones

Plav’s Lake is home to the largest huchen in the world. Specimens over 41kg were caught on the hook, and old fishers tell stories about fish over 70kg, caught in a net many decades ago.

Although many fishers prefer using a boat, fly fishing from the bank is very good

Besides lake trout and huchen, the Lake of Plav is populated with nice grayling, especially near the mouth of the tributary Ljucha, and outflow of the river Lim.

Rich Stillwater offers a good chance to catch a trophy grayling

Of course, there are more species to catch on a fly in this lake. Pike, chub, nase, cactus roach, and even burbot. My guests sometimes enjoy that coarse fish – fly fishing, when we make a strategy-pause, waiting for the better activity of Salmonids.

Pike 90-100cm are not rare, although the average size is 60cm

Chub are big here, and most of them you can catch on a dry fly.

Skilled nymphers, and sometimes dry fly fishers can catch a really large base (Chondrostoma nasus) on the lake

Look online or ask for recommendations for an experienced fly fishing in-field instructor who specializes in Plav’s Lake fishing.

Bosnia and Herzegovina has become one of the most interesting fly fishing destinations in Europe — not because of marketing or luxury lodges, but because it still offers wild rivers, strong fish and genuine fly fishing challenge.

Fly fishing in Bosnia is best suited for anglers who enjoy precise presentation, careful river reading and adapting techniques to changing conditions, rather than easy or heavily managed fishing.

There are many large wild BROWN TROUT in Bosnia & Herzegovina. Wild BROWN TROUT is the number 2 most popular fish among visitors

From crystal-clear limestone rivers rich in grayling to powerful freestone streams holding wild brown trout and huchen, Bosnia offers a rare variety of waters within a relatively small area.

HUCHEN

Bosnia & Herzegovina has many HUCHEN streams. This fish is the largest Salmonid in Europe (maybe even in the world). It’s present in several fly-only rivers in Bosnia. There are more and more streamer enthusiasts asking to feel the power of mysterious HUCHEN.

RIVERS

Ribnik River
Type: Spring-fed limestone river
Main species: Grayling, brown trout
Best techniques: Dry fly, short-line nymphing
Difficulty: High — long leaders and precise drift are essential
Ribnik is often described as a grayling river, but its real value lies in how technically demanding it is. Clear water, steady flow and selective fish punish sloppy presentation, making it an excellent river for anglers who enjoy refining their technique rather than relying on heavy rigs.

Ribnik is the most popular Bosnian river. This grayling/trout river is very comfortable, clear, clean, and rich in trophy fish and insects. Ribnik is the “fly fishing Mecca” of Europe. Whether you are a dry fly purist or euro nymphing fanatic, you will be very happy to fish Ribnik. It is a kind of chalk stream, slow, not too deep, and rich in aquatic plants. Everything on Ribnik looks green, and there are so many graylings and trout hiding behind every weed. Grayling and brown trout above 50cm are not rare in Ribnik, and every single one of them is wild, not stocked. Water is always clear, regardless of the water level. That means you can fish in Ribnik almost every day of the year. Being open 12 months a year contributes to this. The most important rule is to catch and release every fish and use only one fly without a barb.

RIVER PLIVA

Pliva River (Pljeva village)
Type: Spring-fed limestone river
Regulation: Fly-only, catch & release
The Pliva River at Pljeva village is a clear, spring-fed limestone stream located close to the river’s main source. Water temperature remains cold and stable throughout the season, resulting in consistently clear conditions and slow, even flow through open meadows.
The combination of mineral-rich water, abundant sunlight and dense aquatic vegetation supports exceptionally high populations of scuds and aquatic nymphs. This steady food supply allows both grayling and brown trout to grow quickly and remain in excellent condition.
From a fly fishing perspective, Pliva is a technical river where long leaders, controlled drift and precise presentation are essential. Fish are numerous but selective, making the river especially rewarding for anglers who enjoy refining their approach rather than relying on heavy rigs or aggressive methods.

Pliva is located in the northwest part of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

River Unac

The most famous stretch of the Unac is the Special Fly Fishing District in Martin Brod. This 1km section is a catch-and-release paradise, managed under strict regulations to ensure the fish remain large and the water remains pristine.

Because of a nearby fish farm upstream, the river is constantly replenished with healthy, active fish, making it one of the most productive rivers in the Balkans for both beginners and seasoned pros.

Fly fishing in Bosnia is not about numbers or easy success. It is about learning to fish clear water properly, understanding complex currents and approaching wild fish with respect.

For anglers willing to slow down and fish thoughtfully, Bosnian rivers offer some of the most rewarding fly fishing experiences left in Europe.

Fly Fishing in Montenegro

Montenegro is one of Europe’s newest and less explored fly fishing destinations. Although a beautiful mountainous country, with many gin-clear rivers, Montenegro started fly fishing tourism just a decade ago. Their rivers are home to the popular Salmonids, brown trout, huchen, and grayling. Some are highly protected by FLY ONLY NO KILL regulations and are full of trophy wild fish. That’s why the European Fly Fishing Competition 2019 was held in Montenegro, where competitors caught fish over 60cm, and up to 100cm.

River Lim in Plav (119km from Podgorica Airport, 196km from Tirana Airport)

River Lim in Plav is the #1 fly fishing zone in Montenegro, and one of the most popular in the entire Balkans. It’s the best part of the river for GRAYLING and HUCHEN. Lim springs from the natural trout lake, so it runs through a plateau, and meadows, and it’s easily approachable to every fly fishing spot. The lower part of this fly fishing zone is different because Lim becomes rocky and fast.

River Lim in Plav is a very comfortable natural tailwater. It runs through the meadows with an easy approach to every fishing spot.

River Luca in Plav

River Luca (or Ljuča) is a natural spring creek, with ice-cold water during the entire season. It’s famous for trophy graylings that can be seen in every pool. Luca runs through a plateau, and it is a quiet river, with gin-clear water.

Luca is almost a wild river, without many people around, although there are 2 fly only stretches full of nice fish.

Although Luca is famous by large graylings, there are some nice brown trout
