Fly fishing for chub on the beautiful Balkans rivers can be a lot of fun! Actually, that can often be more fun than fishing in some overcrowded famous salmonid-lovers-river. Chub are known for being intelligent, spooky, curious, sensitive, and aggressive feeders, especially during the warmer months, and they are often found in many rivers and streams of the Balkans. Chub are present in the Balkans rivers next to the trout or grayling, but also in lowland rivers very close to the sea. In large or small rivers, you will find chub everywhere, and also in almost every lake. Bosnian rivers Una, Sana, Vrbas, Bosna…Montenegrin Lim, Moraca, Cehotina…Serbian Morava, Timok…Greek Aliakmon, Strymona, Pineios…All of them are full of nice chub and always uncrowded, to fly fish miles and see no other fly fisher. Many of the chub fishing spots are “virgin”.

Best Time to Fish:

Chub feed actively during the early morning and late afternoon when the light is low, but a good catch is often possible in the middle of the sunny hot summer day. In warmer weather, they often rise to the surface, making fly fishing especially effective.

Fly Selection:

Chub aren’t too picky, but there are a few flies that work well:

• Dry Flies: Chub love to rise for insects, especially during summer. Any bushy dry fly could work, but large dry flies, such as foam beetles or balsa wood flies are the best choice. My creation, a pattern called “Bambula” is the most popular in the Balkans.
• Nymphs: Although you can catch chub on almost every classic nymph, the best choices are the mop nymphs and my very effective pattern “The Dude Nymph”.
• Streamers: For larger chub, streamers that imitate small fish like Woolly Buggers or Clousers can trigger a strike.

Technique:

• Surface Action: Cast upstream and let your dry fly drift naturally with the current. Chub are often found under overhanging trees or near the banks, so aim for those spots. It is very important how you will land the fly to the surface. The perfect cast will produce a sound of popping that will attract chub. Often, that sound is much more important than a fly pattern.
• Nymphing: If you’re using a nymph, try a dead drift technique where you allow the fly to drift naturally downstream. Adding a small strike indicator can help a lot but it’s not necessary. Euro nymphing (short cast) is more difficult because it is hard to approach the chub close enough for that technique.

Gear:

A light fly rod, something in the 3-5 weight range, is usually sufficient for chub. They put up a decent fight, so be ready for some fun!

Huchen is typically found in large rivers with clean, cold water, and strong currents. Sava, Savinja, Drina, Kupa, Una, Sana, Lim, Tara… are among the most popular rivers for huchen fishing, although they can also be found in smaller tributaries and streams. Rarely, trophy huchen can also be caught in river lakes, where they are thicker and stronger. It is interesting that huchen prefers the middle parts of rivers, where there are also cyprinids, their favorite food. If only salmonids live in the river, it will be almost impossible to find a huchen.

Huchen lives in deep pools, runs, and undercut banks where it may be hiding. Pay attention to water temperature, as huchen prefers cooler water and may be found in deeper pools during hot weather. Sometimes it is difficult to determine where a huchen is hidden because this large fish has a large area in which it hunts and lives, with no natural enemy to prevent it from doing so. One individual can hold a territory of several hundred meters and can be in any cover in that area.

Use a 7-10 weight fly rod with fast action, a large arbor reel with a good drag system, and a floating line for surface streamers, or a sinking line to get your fly down to the fish. Make sure your gear is powerful, as the huchen can grow very large and put up a strong fight. When nymphing, use at least 4-5 weight Euro nymphing rods and larger diameter tippets 0x-3x.

Huchen feeds on various prey mostly white cyprinid fish, but sometimes crayfish, and large insect nymphs. Giant, articulated streamers with flash materials can be effective in natural colors such as white, cream, black, brown, or olive. Crayfish patterns, worms, and big nymphs can also be effective, even used in the Euro nymphing style.

Use a slow and steady retrieve with occasional pauses to mimic the movement of injured prey. Be sure to strip in enough line quickly to set the hook when you get a bite. When you contact a huchen, set the hook more than once a quick time, to make sure the hook penetrates the hard jaw deep enough. Otherwise, the huchen could easily shake off your fly.

Huchen is often more active early in the morning or late in the evening. If you are fishing during the middle of a sunny summer day, your chances are low, but you could try to focus on deep pools or shades. If a heavy short rain falls and the river gets a little muddy, know that it’s a happy hour for huchen fishing. Don’t miss something like that and then use large streamers. In good weather and water conditions, huchen feed very actively and can strike anywhere in the river.

You will also need to carefully choose your fishing location and timing. Asp tend to feed most actively during the early morning or late afternoon hours. Look for areas where asp are likely to be feeding, such as near weed beds, shoals, or drop-offs, and try to present your fly in a way that mimics the natural movement of a fleeing baitfish. There is a rule that asp prefers a fast and even streamer movement.

Asp are aggressive predators and will often attack their prey with a sudden burst of speed, so you’ll want to use flies that create a lot of movement in the water and trigger that predatory instinct. Asp are found in several rivers and lakes throughout the Balkans, in Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Bulgaria, and even Greece. They are typically found in large and medium-sized, slow-moving rivers with clear water and a rocky or sandy bottom, such as Sava, Bosna, Vrbas, Drina, and Morava (West, South, and Great)… Asp prefers water temperatures between 18°C and 24°C (during the summer), and they are often found in areas with a moderate to strong current.

It is typical of asp that it can be easily spotted when it is active. It is a surface predator, which preys on small fish on the surface. His splashing on the river causes the greatest excitement among fly fishermen. The raising of the trout or grayling is nothing compared to “the raising” of an asp. It usually looks like there is a crocodile in the water, not a fish. Sometimes, asp jump very often on the surface of the river, more frequently than most of the predators.
