<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For many fly fishing enthusiasts, the ideal vacation balances casting a fly with the opportunity to enjoy quality time with the family. Imagine this: you’re in Greece, surrounded by stunning landscapes, rich culture, and the calming sound of flowing water, all just a short drive from the sandy beaches where your loved ones are soaking up the sun. This unique combination makes that country a hidden gem for fly fishing travelers. Moreover, incorporating fly fishing into your vacation allows you to explore Greece&#8217;s diverse landscapes. After a rewarding day by the river, imagine reuniting with your family for a sunset dinner at a seaside tavern. Everyone is happy, and the vacation is complete even for a passionate freshwater fly fisherman.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/ivan-Stavros-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-403" srcset="http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/ivan-Stavros-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/ivan-Stavros-300x225.jpg 300w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/ivan-Stavros-768x576.jpg 768w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/ivan-Stavros-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/ivan-Stavros-600x450.jpg 600w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/ivan-Stavros.jpg 2000w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For anglers and adventure travelers alike, North Greece offers an unparalleled experience, particularly for those eager to cast their flies for chub in its remarkable rivers. Just a 30-minute drive from popular beach destinations, you can find pristine rivers teeming with fish. The Struma, Aggitis, and Aliakmonas rivers are unexploited by the global fly fishing community. They are waiting only for you. These warm waters, rich in large chubs, invite you to be one of the first to enjoy fly fishing on them. Don’t miss the chance to be one of the early explorers of this fantastic fly-fishing frontier!</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/aggitisfly-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-388" srcset="http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/aggitisfly-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/aggitisfly-300x225.jpg 300w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/aggitisfly-768x576.jpg 768w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/aggitisfly-600x450.jpg 600w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/aggitisfly.jpg 1333w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Chub may not be the most glamorous of species, but their abundant presence in North Greece’s rivers creates exciting opportunities for fly anglers. These fish are eager takers, especially when using dry flies, but also nymphs and even streamers. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Fly fishing for chub on the beautiful Balkans rivers can be a lot of fun! Actually, that can often be more fun than fishing in some overcrowded famous salmonid-lovers-river. Chub are known for being intelligent, spooky, curious, sensitive, and aggressive feeders, especially during the warmer months, and they are often found in many rivers and streams of the Balkans. Just the perfect fish created for fly fishing any style. If you are not speckled-fish lover, continue reading.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/aggitisfly-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-388" srcset="http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/aggitisfly-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/aggitisfly-300x225.jpg 300w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/aggitisfly-768x576.jpg 768w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/aggitisfly-600x450.jpg 600w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/aggitisfly.jpg 1333w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Chub are present in the Balkans rivers next to the trout or grayling, but also in lowland rivers very close to the sea. In large or small rivers, you will find chub everywhere, and also in almost every lake. Bosnian rivers Una, Sana, Vrbas, Bosna&#8230;Montenegrin Lim, Moraca, Cehotina&#8230;Serbian Morava, Timok&#8230;Greek Aliakmon, Strymona, Pineios&#8230;All of them are full of nice chub and always uncrowded, to fly fish miles and see no other fly fisher. Many of the chub fishing spots are &#8220;virgin&#8221;.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/aliakmon-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-389" srcset="http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/aliakmon-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/aliakmon-300x225.jpg 300w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/aliakmon-768x576.jpg 768w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/aliakmon-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/aliakmon-600x450.jpg 600w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/aliakmon.jpg 2000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Best Time to Fish:</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Chub feed actively during the early morning and late afternoon when the light is low, but a good catch is often possible in the middle of the sunny hot summer day. In warmer weather, they often rise to the surface, making fly fishing especially effective.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/chubs-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-390" srcset="http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/chubs-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/chubs-300x225.jpg 300w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/chubs-768x576.jpg 768w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/chubs-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/chubs-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/chubs-600x450.jpg 600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Fly Selection:</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="1024" src="https://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/bambulaidudinka-1024x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-391" srcset="http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/bambulaidudinka-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/bambulaidudinka-300x300.jpg 300w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/bambulaidudinka-150x150.jpg 150w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/bambulaidudinka-768x768.jpg 768w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/bambulaidudinka-1536x1536.jpg 1536w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/bambulaidudinka-600x600.jpg 600w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/bambulaidudinka-100x100.jpg 100w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/bambulaidudinka.jpg 1657w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Chub aren&#8217;t too picky, but there are a few flies that work well:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Dry Flies:</strong> Chub love to rise for insects, especially during summer. Any bushy dry fly could work, but large dry flies, such as foam beetles or balsa wood flies are the best choice. My creation, a pattern called &#8220;Bambula&#8221; is the most popular in the Balkans.</li>

<li><strong>Nymphs:</strong> Although you can catch chub on almost every classic nymph, the best choices are the mop nymphs and my very effective pattern &#8220;The Dude Nymph&#8221;.</li>

<li><strong>Streamers:</strong> For larger chub, streamers that imitate small fish like <em>Woolly Buggers</em> or Clousers can trigger a strike.</li>
</ul>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Technique:</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Surface Action:</strong> Cast upstream and let your dry fly drift naturally with the current. Chub are often found under overhanging trees or near the banks, so aim for those spots. It is very important how you will land the fly to the surface. The perfect cast will produce a sound of popping that will attract chub. Often, that sound is much more important than a fly pattern.</li>

<li><strong>Nymphing:</strong> If you&#8217;re using a nymph, try a dead drift technique where you allow the fly to drift naturally downstream. Adding a small strike indicator can help a lot but it&#8217;s not necessary. Euro nymphing (short cast) is more difficult because it is hard to approach the chub close enough for that technique.</li>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Huchen, also known as hucho or Danube salmon, is a large freshwater game fish native to the Danube basin rivers in Europe. They are known for their size, strength, and fighting ability, making them a popular target for anglers. Huchen is one of the largest salmonid species, reaching up to 150cm in length. Specimens in the range of 70-110cm are considered common. Huchen over 120cm are trophies, reaching a weight of over 20kg.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<a href="https://flic.kr/p/Kw6eeV"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/8138/28563856003_368659ee34_z.jpg" alt="Huchen" width="640" height="361" /></a>
</div></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Huchen is typically found in large rivers with clean, cold water, and strong currents. Sava, Savinja, Drina, Kupa, Una, Sana, Lim, Tara&#8230; are among the most popular rivers for huchen fishing, although they can also be found in smaller tributaries and streams. Rarely, trophy huchen can also be caught in river lakes, where they are thicker and stronger. It is interesting that huchen prefers the middle parts of rivers, where there are also cyprinids, their favorite food. If only salmonids live in the river, it will be almost impossible to find a huchen.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<a href="https://flic.kr/p/2ff77ff"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/7906/47417309922_b8641270cb_z.jpg" alt="Nisava river" width="640" height="427" /></a>
</div><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Typical huchen river in the Balkans</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Huchen lives in deep pools, runs, and undercut banks where it may be hiding. Pay attention to water temperature, as huchen prefers cooler water and may be found in deeper pools during hot weather. Sometimes it is difficult to determine where a huchen is hidden because this large fish has a large area in which it hunts and lives, with no natural enemy to prevent it from doing so. One individual can hold a territory of several hundred meters and can be in any cover in that area. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/P5310156.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-348" srcset="http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/P5310156.jpg 1024w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/P5310156-600x450.jpg 600w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/P5310156-300x225.jpg 300w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/P5310156-768x576.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Chub on the surface &#8211; huchen&#8217;s favorite food</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Use a 7-10 weight fly rod with fast action, a large arbor reel with a good drag system, and a floating line for surface streamers, or a sinking line to get your fly down to the fish. Make sure your gear is powerful, as the huchen can grow very large and put up a strong fight. When nymphing, use at least 4-5 weight Euro nymphing rods and larger diameter tippets 0x-3x.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/DSC_0067.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-349" srcset="http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/DSC_0067.jpg 1024w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/DSC_0067-600x450.jpg 600w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/DSC_0067-300x225.jpg 300w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/DSC_0067-768x576.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Huchen feeds on various prey mostly white cyprinid fish, but sometimes crayfish, and large insect nymphs. Giant, articulated streamers with flash materials can be effective in natural colors such as white, cream, black, brown, or olive. Crayfish patterns, worms, and big nymphs can also be effective, even used in the Euro nymphing style.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="1024" src="https://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/IMG_0671-1024x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-350" srcset="http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/IMG_0671-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/IMG_0671-300x300.jpg 300w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/IMG_0671-100x100.jpg 100w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/IMG_0671-600x600.jpg 600w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/IMG_0671-150x150.jpg 150w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/IMG_0671-768x768.jpg 768w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/IMG_0671.jpg 1500w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Use a slow and steady retrieve with occasional pauses to mimic the movement of injured prey. Be sure to strip in enough line quickly to set the hook when you get a bite. When you contact a huchen, set the hook more than once a quick time, to make sure the hook penetrates the hard jaw deep enough. Otherwise, the huchen could easily shake off your fly.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/IMG_2252-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-351" srcset="http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/IMG_2252-1024x576.jpg 1024w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/IMG_2252-600x338.jpg 600w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/IMG_2252-300x169.jpg 300w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/IMG_2252-768x432.jpg 768w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/IMG_2252-1536x864.jpg 1536w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/IMG_2252.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Huchen is often more active early in the morning or late in the evening. If you are fishing during the middle of a sunny summer day, your chances are low, but you could try to focus on deep pools or shades. If a heavy short rain falls and the river gets a little muddy, know that it&#8217;s a happy hour for huchen fishing. Don&#8217;t miss something like that and then use large streamers. In good weather and water conditions, huchen feed very actively and can strike anywhere in the river.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/DSC04633-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-352" srcset="http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/DSC04633-1024x576.jpg 1024w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/DSC04633-600x338.jpg 600w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/DSC04633-300x169.jpg 300w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/DSC04633-768x432.jpg 768w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/DSC04633-1536x864.jpg 1536w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/DSC04633.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Huchen fishing is a challenging and rewarding experience for experienced anglers. With the right gear, technique, and timing, you can increase your chances of hooking into one of these impressive fish.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/0hocjo119-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-353" style="width:840px;height:472px" srcset="http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/0hocjo119-1024x576.jpg 1024w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/0hocjo119-600x338.jpg 600w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/0hocjo119-300x169.jpg 300w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/0hocjo119-768x432.jpg 768w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/0hocjo119-1536x864.jpg 1536w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/0hocjo119.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Several guides in the Balkans specialize in fly fishing for huchen. Look for an <a href="https://ivanflyguide.com/about-me/">in field instructor</a> with experience fishing for huchen and knowledge of the local waters. Also, be sure to inquire about their equipment, flies, and <a href="http://ivanflyguide.com/offers/guided-fly-fishing-in-the-balkans/">methods</a> to ensure that they align with your preferences and experience level.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Grayling is an important and valued species in Europe, providing recreational and ecological benefits to many communities including the Balkans. Here, people have realized this recently and are making a great effort to turn many rivers into highly protected areas for grayling lovers.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<a href="https://flic.kr/p/2i4Kg19"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49269147372_4dba2a0c61_z.jpg" alt="Grayling on dry fly" width="640" height="360" /></a>
</div><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Balkan graylings are beautiful and strong</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Fly fishing for grayling in the Balkans can be an exciting and rewarding experience for anglers. The Balkans region is known for its stunning natural beauty, crystal clear rivers, and abundant populations of grayling. Here are some tips to help you make the most of your fly fishing trip for grayling in the Balkans:</p>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Timing </strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The best time to go fly fishing for grayling in the Balkans is during the late spring, summer, and early autumn months, from May to October. This is when the rivers are at their lowest and clearest, and the grayling are more active and willing to take your flies.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<a href="https://flic.kr/p/2i4FVDL"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49268496938_45edfa5647_z.jpg" alt="Big Grayling On Dry Fly" width="640" height="360" /></a>
</div><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Dry fly in the mouth of 55cm wild grayling</figcaption></figure>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Equipment</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For fly fishing for grayling in the Balkans, you will need a light to medium-weight fly rod (AFTMA 4-6), typically 8-9 feet in length, with a weight-forward floating line. A leader of around 9-12 feet is recommended, with a tippet of 4-6x. Of course, if you are a Euro nymphing fan, then I recommend a 10-11&#8243; # 2-4 rod. Make sure to bring a variety of dry flies and nymphs to match the hatch and conditions.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<a href="https://flic.kr/p/Ja4s7V"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/7509/27669505921_306288165a_z.jpg" alt="Pair of graylings" width="640" height="480" /></a>
</div><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">9&#8243; #5 dry fly rod and simultaneous catch of two guided flyfishers</figcaption></figure>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Location</strong> </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Balkans region has many great rivers for fly fishing for grayling, including the Sava, Una, Sana, <a href="https://ivanflyguide.com/fly-fishing-rivers-and-lakes/fly-fishing-bosnia/">Pliva, Ribnik</a>, Kupa, Cetina, Neretva, Vrbas, Sanica, Drina, Tara<a href="https://ivanflyguide.com/fly-fishing-rivers-and-lakes/fly-fishing-montenegro/">, Lim, Ljuča</a>, Đetinja&#8230; rivers. These rivers offer a range of fishing opportunities, from small streams to larger rivers with deep pools and riffles.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<a href="https://flic.kr/p/2nXWDz6"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52485254387_2cd46a0be7_z.jpg" alt="River Lim" width="640" height="427" /></a>
</div><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Typical grayling spot on a limestone river</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Grayling rivers in the Balkans are mostly limestone, but there are also freestone rivers. All of them are beautiful in a way that is rarely seen in Europe, and very clear. The surrounding around those rivers are also breathtaking.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<a href="https://flic.kr/p/J57szG"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/7404/27613510330_53b865d9ab_z.jpg" alt="Tara Canyon" width="640" height="480" /></a>
</div><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Freestone grayling river</figcaption></figure>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Technique</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When fly fishing for grayling in the Balkans, it&#8217;s important to use a variety of techniques to catch these fish. Dry fly fishing can be very effective, especially during hatches of mayflies, caddisflies, and midges. Nymph fishing is also productive, with patterns such as the Hare&#8217;s Ear and Pheasant Tail working well. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/lim-tehnique-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-317" srcset="http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/lim-tehnique-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/lim-tehnique-600x450.jpg 600w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/lim-tehnique-300x225.jpg 300w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/lim-tehnique-768x576.jpg 768w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/lim-tehnique-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, http://ivanflyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/lim-tehnique.jpg 2000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Grayling fishing with small flies and light tackle is common in the Balkans. Hook sizes below 14 are recommended, and some anglers go down to 24 and even smaller. But that is not always the rule. When water levels are higher, especially in the spring and fall, fly sizes go up to size 8.</p>

</div><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Olives are #1 flies by popularity </figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Balkan rivers abound with small mayflies, especially olive flies. Their subimagos, emergers, and spinners are the favorite insects that local fly fishermen imitate when fishing for grayling.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On Balkan fly-fishing beats, which often span only a few kilometers and are easily accessible, a traditional guide is rarely a necessity. What truly elevates the experience is not a pathfinder but a <strong><a href="https://ivanflyguide.com/offers/guided-fly-fishing-in-the-balkans/">certified in-field instructor</a></strong>. When selecting a mentor for your Balkan grayling adventure, it is crucial to prioritize an instructor with recognized certification and a profound mastery of river hydraulics, entomology, and advanced fly-tying. Rather than simply being shown where to cast, working with an instructor allows you to deconstruct complex local strategies and master the nuanced presentation techniques required for selective grayling. This pedagogical approach transforms your time on the water into a high-level masterclass, ensuring you leave with sharpened skills that last a lifetime.</p>

</div><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Keep them clear and rich</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Respect the environment: When fly fishing for grayling in the Balkans, it&#8217;s important to respect the environment and local regulations. Always practice catch-and-release, and avoid fishing in areas where fish are spawning. Additionally, make sure to obtain any necessary permits or licenses before fishing.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Fly fishing for grayling in the Balkans can be an unforgettable experience for any angler. With the right equipment, technique, and location, you can enjoy some of the best fly fishing in the world while surrounded by stunning scenery and abundant wildlife.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Bosnia and Herzegovina has become one of the most interesting fly fishing destinations in Europe — not because of marketing or luxury lodges, but because it still offers <strong>wild rivers, strong fish and genuine fly fishing challenge</strong>.</p>

This grayling/trout river is very comfortable, clear, clean, and rich in trophy fish and insects. Ribnik is the &#8220;fly fishing Mecca&#8221; of Europe. Whether you are a dry fly purist or euro nymphing fanatic, you will be very happy to fish Ribnik. It is a kind of chalk stream, slow, not too deep, and rich in aquatic plants. Everything on Ribnik looks green, and there are so many graylings and trout hiding behind every weed. Grayling and brown trout above 50cm are not rare in Ribnik, and every single one of them is wild, not stocked. Water is always clear, regardless of the water level. That means you can fish in Ribnik almost every day of the year. Being open 12 months a year contributes to this. The most important rule is to catch and release every fish and use only one fly without a barb.</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Montenegro is one of Europe&#8217;s newest and less explored fly fishing destinations. Although a beautiful mountainous country, with many gin-clear rivers, Montenegro started fly fishing tourism just a decade ago. Their rivers are home to the popular Salmonids, brown trout, huchen, and grayling. Some are highly protected by FLY ONLY NO KILL regulations and are full of trophy wild fish. That&#8217;s why the European Fly Fishing Competition 2019 was held in Montenegro, where competitors caught fish over 60cm, and up to 100cm.</p>
